Annual Burn Ban
Annual Spring Burn Ban
- When: March 16 through May 14 each year.
- What's banned: Burning of residential yard debris like branches, leaves, or grass clippings.
- Why: To prevent wildfires during a period of high risk.
- What's allowed: Small campfires, small cooking fires, and ceremonial bonfires are generally allowed, but check local regulations.
Temporary Burn Bans
- When: Issued as needed, based on current fire danger and weather conditions.
- What's banned: All outdoor fires, including uncontained campfires and open fires for cooking, are prohibited.
- What's allowed: Exceptions are generally made for small, contained campfires and cooking fires.
Burning garbage or trash (like paper, plastic, or metal) is also illegal year-round in New York, so please don’t toss those into any fire. These rules help reduce air pollution and keep our fire risks low.
